Art criticism encompasses a wide variety of approaches, from critical commentary to more subjective emotional reactions inspired by viewing works of art.

An art critics help viewers perceive, interpret, and judge artworks. Critics tend to focus more on modern and contemporary art from cultures close to their own.

The art critic is one of the most sought after persons in this creative field. For one, it’s always good to have someone to bounce their ideas on, gain qualified feedback or just for pre-sharing. On the other hand, critics sometimes reflect the views of the public or potential client and at times act as a yardstick to measure the presented work against standards that they should be well familiar with. A critic must be knowledgeable of elements such as the techniques, language, style, perspective, perception. At the same time they must be able to see as the artists, and beyond the artist, to make sound and balanced judgment, after accurate interpretations. In the end benefiting artists, whether performing of visual benefit and garner great financial rewards. In brief critiquing art calls for four stages:

1. DESCRIPTION:

First at all, answers the question, “What do you see?” In their own words tell a tale of what they see: The name of the artist who created the artwork; The kind of an artwork is it; The name of the artwork; Date of creation; Name and relate other major events in history that occurred at the same time this artwork was created; List the literal or recognized objects in the painting (trees, people, animals, mountains, rivers, etc.). g. What they notice at first sight? Why? The colours used, their hues, applications; the recognised shapes, their structure, texture, edges, outline the recognised lines and types; the textures; the connotated time of day; the overall visual effect or mood of the work

2. ANALYSE:

Before the critics have their description, they continue to answer the question, “How did the artist do it?” to describe how the artist uses them to organize and balance the elements, and then weigh the balance of outcome.

3. INTERPRETATION:

In this stage, they apply their training, experience, expertise and factual knowledge in translating in their own thoughts and words the artwork set before them.

4. JUDGEMENT:

After careful observation, analysis, and interpretation of an artwork, critics must make their own judgment. This is their personal evaluation based on their understanding and measurements. They must also evaluate the success of the work against the aim, objective.
Is it a good artwork? What evidence inside or outside the artwork relates to each criterion? Based on the criteria and evidence, what is their judgment about the quality of the artwork? Are some question must be answer.

If you are thinking about decorating your home, acquiring an oil painting is a great way of accomplishing this. It doesn’t matter what style your home is, be it modern, classical or Victorian there is an oil painting that will fit your style. With the explosion of galleries, online art websites and auction houses the chances of not finding the perfect piece of art for your home is nearly impossible today.

Understanding colors and layout of the room – When looking at the room make note of the wall space. Is there enough room to hang the painting, are the walls mostly windows? What are the colors of the walls, will they make the painting standout? Each room is different, the family room is a place where the family congregates and usually watches TV or other activities. So a relaxing or serene painting might not fit into this type of room. Take in the room in, look at the color, the furniture, the lighting and use this information to determine what type of painting would be right for the room.

Room style – The furniture in the room defines your style for that room. Is the room modern, Victorian or traditional. Choosing a traditional painting and placing it in the modern will not have the desired effect. The painting you choose should complement the room and the room should complement the painting. The painting you choose should enhance and complete the room’s style.

Room color – There are so many paint colors on the market today that many people have changed their wall color to one of these fancy new wall colors. Choosing a painting that consists of many colors and hanging it on a colorful wall the painting will most likely get lost. Using neutral colors in a room will allow your painting to standout. Neutral colors are in the family of whites and tans. Using these colors will allow your painting to “pop” on the wall. Before changing the color on the wall take a photo of painting and use it to see what the painting would look like on the wall in the room. This will help you make a decision on the wall color and the painting you choose.

Painting size – Many people make the mistake of purchasing a painting that is either too small or too large for the room. Oil paintings are much different than prints, posters or any other type of medium, to appreciate an oil painting, artists normally paint them on a larger scale. These paintings need to be viewed from a distance to be appreciated. When acquiring an oil painting make sure the wall size is large enough to fit the oil painting. You need to have enough space around the painting for the artwork to look proportionally correct.

Oil paintings tell a story – Using the style of the room which includes color, furniture and knick knacks the entire room tells a story and the painting should be included in that story. When visiting a gallery or shopping online for a painting make sure you have a picture of your room so you can see if the painting fits into the style and story of the room.

There are many reasons to start making your own candles. You can create candles for their practical purpose of light. Candlemaking is an enjoyable pastime and fun thing to do with older children. It will express your ceative side. Your candles can be given away as personalized gifts. And of course, you can make money by selling them.

Candlemaking is an extremely rewarding hobby. Many people enjoy seeing what they create. It can be very fun to give away your creations as gifts as well. Learning how to make candles at home is very easy to do. Many local craft stores have all the materials that you need in a kit. As the hobby expands, you see more and more different molds, colors, dyes and fragrances for candlemaking in the stores.

Candlemaking Tips for Your Own Homemade Candles

Use a double boiler. A double boiler is a large pot filled partially with water with a smaller pot filled with the unmelted wax that you plan on turning into a candle The layer of water in between the pot and the heat source prevents the wax from burning.

After the wax has melted, it is ready for pouring. Hold the wick in place in the center of the mold as you carefully pour the wax into it.

The wax will need to cool for four to six hours, so be patient and find something else to do. In order to easily remove the wax from the mold, you may want to spray it with nonstick cooking spray prior to pouring the melted wax.

Candle Making Molds

There are a variety of different fun styles, shapes, sizes and colors of the candles that you can make. This is where the creative expression comes into play. You are unlimited to how many different combinations and styles that you come up with. Most candle makers will find a signature style after experimenting for awhile.

While there are plenty of jars and molds already on the market, some experienced candle makers create their own latex molds. There is no limit to the endless possibilities when making candles.

Unfortunately, latex molds are too flexible to support the weight of the wax without altering its shape. All latex molds need a lip or a hard piece of cardboard or other devide to create a frame as a support structure.

Selling Your Homemade Candles

Many people have an entrepreneur inside of them. You can sell your candle creations online, at local craft fairs, and at nearby shops. The market is very large for such a usable product. Candles make great gifts because they add ambiance and essential light when the power goes out.

These are just some basic candlemaking tips to get you started learning how to make candles at home.

There is nothing that beats a good portrait photograph. Especially when both the subject and the photographer are pleased with the results. But, if you want to take good portrait photos you need to think about investing in the right sort of lens. If you want your subjects to be pleased with the results of your work, then make sure you get a lens fit for the job. And that means, one with the correct focal length. Lenses with a focal length less than 80mm are no good. They make noses look too big because the photographer has to get in too close. The ideal portrait lens has a focal length in the range 90mm to 135mm. These keep the natural proportions of the face as you see with the naked eye.

Don’t forget your sensor size when determining the equivalent focal length. Most modern digital cameras have a sensor that is smaller than the 35mm film equivalent. This means you have to factor in a multiplier to get the correct lens focal length. A film lens of 50mm would work out 80mm on a digital sensor with a 1.6 multiplier factor. Refer to your camera handbook for information on magnification factors for sensors. A longer focal length means you can stand a bit further away and still fill the frame to your desire. This makes the nose more in proportion with the rest of the face and is very flattering.

In terms of preference, you could differentiate based on form and subject. Form has to do with the kind of painting. Some people like oil paintings art and others prefer watercolor paintings art. Some prefer framed art prints on the walls, while others like anything framed, such as craftwork in cloth, metal, wood etc. The subject of a painting is anything the artist looks at or thinks of. It could be a landscape, a portrait, an object or even an emotion! With so much choice available, be a little cautious and a little adventurous when you shop around for your own collection.

Artwork pieces for the home -Buying a wall painting art for your living space is a lot more than just wall décor. It is a little bit of you up there on your wall. Spend some time doing your homework. Read up on painters and artists, their favorite themes and topics and their style of painting. Take a long and critical look at the room that will potentially house the painting. Is it a big and bright room with lots of floor and walls space or is it average to small and filled with clutter? Do you have small kids? What kind of lighting does the room have? These are just a few of the considerations to keep in mind before heading off to the painting gallery.

Artwork pieces for the office -A detailed portrait of someone inspiring or an inspired landscape oil painting can make for a very uplifting office space. The kind of artwork pieces you do also plays a role in what art will be beautiful and what will be an eyesore. So whether you work in a kindergarten or at an ultra-conservative bank, get wall art decor to match. Artwork pieces for the home office -A space where you live and work has to be cozily comforting and efficiently stimulating at the same time. Artwork pieces for the home office can either highlight the ‘home’ aspect, with still life paints of people and domestic landscape, or draw attention to the ‘office’ aspect with wall art decor even going the Modern Art way. Whatever you pick, make it something that enhances your working from home experience.

Most people think that craft is a hobby that only young people have. However, this is not true as many seniors enjoy this hobby. Also, at times, the talent and skill for crafts only appears once the person has retired and is free from all family obligations. When seniors are bored or looking for a way to keep themselves busy, crafts can come handy. It is a hobby that is relaxing and also enjoyable. Craft as a hobby can actually be a boon for seniors. It will keep their mind busy and also avoid boredom from setting in. Usually most seniors live alone and they may not be mobile enough to socialize constantly. This can lead to depression and loneliness. However, cultivating crafts as a hobby can help them channelize their energy and also forget about their loneliness and depression. It can keep them busy for hours. In addition, certain crafts help to improve coordination and keep the sensory organs well exercised.

Be it painting, sketching or making jewelry can help seniors immensely. Not only can they improve their concentration levels and focus, they will feel happy and satisfied looking at the end results. Also, they can make some money on the side if they are good at it. Many craft items like jewelry, dolls or birdhouses can be sold locally. If the person is good at painting or sketching, then these too can be exhibited at a local gallery and put up for sale. Today, there are several classes that are available for seniors that teach many different types of crafts. Check out the local organizations or senior centers. They will definitely have a craft workshop. If not anything, you can learn a new craft and at the same time make new friends. Think about taking a class to learn pottery, weaving, making greeting cards, painting, sand painting or scrap booking. These are activities that most seniors love and are also good at them.
